Surrinder Bains Ardas (The Sikh Prayer) I was brought up in a Sikh family and devotional Sikh prayers and songs were a part of my everyday life at home and at The Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) I can still remember learning the Punjabi Alphabet. Chalte Chalte Yunhi Koi Mil Gaya Tha - Lata Mangeshkar There was a BBC TV programme on Sunday mornings called Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan (New way new Life) aimed at the Indian community in the UK. Every Sunday morning we would all excitedly watch this programme delivered in Hindi and Punjabi. It was a rare occasion to see or hear Indian people on TV back then. At the end of the programme they would play a song from a recent Hindi film. This was one of those songs. Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks Vivid memories of hearing him on Top of the Pops. I can remember hearing him singing on our black and white television. Sometimes we would watch him on Top of the Pops. My dad did not like pop music but for some reason he would join us to watch it. Chal Chal Chal Mere Saathi - Kishore Kumar Sometime around 1971 my dad bought a radio and it was really exciting having this new thing in the house. Dad would tune into the local radio station where the saying was 'Hello Brummies'. I can remember Dad saying that is what they call people from this area. Having the radio opened up a whole new world to us. My first language is Punjabi and my earliest memories are of this language. Zindagi ek Safar Hai Suhana - Kishore Kumar As a child I would copy this singer's dance moves and as a family we laugh about it then and today.
